Water Damage Temporarily Closing Newtown High School

Water Damage Temporarily Closing Newtown High School

Posted on 08 Feb, 2023

Newtown High School will be closing and sending all students home at 10 am today — Monday, February 6 — after flooding from an apparent leak or water system malfunction caused "extensive damage" to the newest wing of the Berkshire Road facility.

The Newtown Bee is in touch with Superintendent of Schools Chris Melillo, and further information is expected in a matter of hours. The damage resulted from a frozen pipe, the superintendent related.

According to a message circulated to parents and posted on the high school's Facebook page just after 8 am today: "This morning at Newtown High School we discovered a flood in our F wing which caused extensive damage to our school. Due to the damage, we will need to close Newtown High School at 10 am this morning. This closing will only impact Newtown High School. Transportation will be provided for the students. The district will keep you informed about any further closings this week as a result of this situation.
